Re: Suppliers to the Confederacy Volume II
The following review appeared in the new Sept 2016 edition of Civil War News:
Subject:
Book Review of Suppliers to the Confederacy Volume II by Craig L Barry & David Burt, 304 pp, 2016, Schiffer, www.schifferbooks.com $39.99.
This work is part of a two-volume set designed to be the definitive reference on British arms and accoutrements used by the Confederacy. It is an expanded version of a work we reviewed and strongly recommended in 2014. Building on their solid foundation of detailed research, Craig Barry and David Burt have made a good reference even better. This volume includes a variety of new supplies and some previously unpublished histories of several gunmakers.
Knapsacks, snake buckles and waist belts are among the new personal items discussed. Additional information is included for ammunition bags, sword frogs, oil bottles and bayonet scabbards. Perhaps the most interesting addition is the inclusion of various gunmakers like London Armoury, King & Phillips, CW James and Pryse & Redman. New photographs further enhance the work by providing detailed illustrations of the more unusual accoutrements.
The new chapters follow the same format as those in the previous work, making it easy to understand the new material. They further enhance readers' ability to understand the logistical challenges the Confederacy faced in attempting to negotiate with the European firms. The book is exceptionally well priced. It continues to be a wonderful reference tool for those interested in Quartermaster functions, general mercantile operations and foreign support of the American Civil War. It receives my strongest recommendation.
Reviewer Richard Blumberg has a Masters degree with honors in Civil War studies. He is past president of the Houston Civil War Round Table and is a speaker for that group and the Society of Women in the Civil War. He also reviews books for the Blue and Gray Education Society.Craig L Barry
