Looking for Early War Photos - Ohio

I am looking for early war photos of Ohio regiments. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to look? Looking for anything on Ohio uniforms from April 1861 to February 1862. Any help would be appreciated.

If I get some time I will look at some of my CDs I have with photos saved from eBay and various auction houses, ect over the years.

What exactly are you looking for/ or not looking for in regards to unifroms?

Sorry for the lack of information. I am looking for photos of infantry uniforms. My concentration centers on uniforms that would have been issued to regiments from April 1861 to early 1862. I am intersted in - jackets (possible colors, number of buttons, and length which includes pants); accoutrement types (with or without plates and size - .58 or .69); knapsacks (soft pack or wooden frame); types of head-gear (with or without letters); canteens; haversacks; and arms issued. Any and all information is greatly appreciated. Also looking for early militia photos if they can be found.

John Sarver (aka "Agate") would be a good person to talk with--he posts regularly on the AC forums. Larry Strayer, with whom I've corresponded but whom I've never met, also has a very large private collection of Ohio images.

The Ohio papers have often been good founts of information for textual descriptions of uniforms and equipment. To wit:

10 May 1861 Columbus OH "Weekly Gazette" (p. 3, col. 3) describing A. M. Denig's knapsack- making operation for the State of Ohio:

KNAPSACKS.--Strolling through the workshops in the [Ohio State] Penitentiary the other day, we tarried awhile with A. M. Denig & Co., to witness the process of manufacturing knapsacks, this firm having recently taken a contract for supplying the government with two thousand of these indispensable articles [making "500 a week, at the rate of two dollars for each...."] for the convenience of the soldier. About forty hands were employed in cutting, stitching, strapping, buckling, boxing, covering and lettering, and so rapidly was the work executed that no difficulty was found in providing daily for a Company of a hundred men. The material of which these knapsacks are made of is called enamelled duck having a bright morocco finish, warranted water proof.
The pattern was selected with great, good judgement, from the most tasty of those worn by the New York troops. There are three sets of straps to each; breast straps, shoulder straps and blanket straps, so fastened as to make the knapsack self adjusting, thus preserving at all times, when worn, a graceful appearance. The inside boxes are made by machinery, strong but light, the knapsack complete weighing less than three pounds.
The firm of A. M. Denig & Co., has long been extensively engaged in the manufacture of children's cabs, buggies, light wagons, hobby horses and the like, and the nature of such a business of course, gives them peculiar advantages over all others in the manufacture of knapsacks.
We trust the officers of State awarding contracts, will make it a point to encourage home enterprise, and that they will endeavor to avoid the too common practice of passing by our own mechanics to swell the pockets of the millionaires of the East, even though they may not save a few dollars by the operation. Let the taxes raised in Ohio, be expended in Ohio, to the advantage of the people of Ohio.

I also found a large amount of information about early Ohio uniforms (specifically those of the 19th OVI) while doing research for the Rich Mountain event last year. I'd have to dig it out, but I can provide it to you upon request. The 19th OVI, incidentally, was issued "india-rubber" canteens.

The July/August 2005 Issue of Military Images Magazine was devoted to Ohio Troops in the Civil War. A great issue with dozens of outstanding photos. A must-have for Ohio-philes. http://www.civilwar-photos.com/ Their website has not been updated recently and I'll bet you can get the back issue. It's Vol. XXVII, Number 1.

Ohio Uniform Resarch

The Company of Military Historians ran a series of plates on early war Ohio Regiments. The bulk of the information provided by a Mr. James Kochan of War of 1812 fame in research. I have not seen a lot of photos of early war Ohians-- but, I do not live in Ohio. Go to two places-- one on the Company of Military Historians Forum on their website-- and look at the old Journals for articles on Ohio uniforms, Civil War.
