  • Old Liphograph...

    Hey,

My family has an old liphograph of my great-great grandfather with some sort of armed and uniformed unit. We dont know a lot about my great-great grandfather, other than he was of age and living in N.Y.C. at the time the Civil War broke out...but my great grandmother use to always say he was a German sharpshooter out of New York...weather he served in the Civil War or not she never could say. Well...if you look a t the liphograph, all of the "soidiers" are in uniform and color bearers have U.S. and New York State colors. Another interesting feature is the writing at the bottom, which is in German, that mentions the twenty fifth anniversary of something. The picture is dated July 1888,and when you do the math... 25 years back would fall around the Battle of Gettysburg. That would make sense if the picture were a reunion photo, being as most of the members of the outfit are elderly looking, beards etc. and they all have what appears to be GAR swords.

Anyway...I am greatly interested in this and if anyone knows of any all or primarilly German regiments out of New York City, info would be greatly appreciated. I have been told that Berdan's 1st U.S. Sharpshooters recriuted from the N.Y.C./PA area and had a large amount of German immigrants.

Well...info would be greatly appreciated and i am very eager to find out about my family's past.

    Hello E. J. M.,

Can you provide decent-quality photos of the item in question? This would help a great deal in the identification process.

By the way, I presume you are actually referring to a lithograph?

Or Glyphography. That would make sense for an 1888 mass printed image.

Here's the actual picture...Yeah...I know the quality sucks but its the best I can get right now

The writing on the bottom says:

        Deutscher Schutzen Bund
Bur Drinnerung an das 25 jahrl Bubildum. 1888

Henry Schoerrn Photo. 43 Ave. A, Cor. 3rd Street N.Y.

...at least I think thats what it says...the old fancy German writing is very tough to decipher

My great-great grandfather is the bearded man with the sword 4 men from the right in the first main row

again im sorry for the poor quality...the original is large and hard to size down

        -thanks for the help

          Eric,

My German's not so good, but my guess is that it's related to a shooting club or event, rather than a military unit. Still a very cool piece of family history.

I believe drinnerung should be erinnerung which would be like a souvenir or memento. Not sure what the bubildum is supposed to be since that's not a word in German. Perhaps it is bildung?

Roughly, it is a souvenir picture for a German shooting club commemorating the 25 years since their establishment. These shooting clubs were pretty popular I believe here and in Germany.
