RMSC Players and the Friends of Mt. Hope Cemetery
Present a Theatrical Walking Tour:
A Circle of Friends— An Abolitionists’ Tour of Mount Hope in 1860
Rochester, NY—In 1860 Frederick Douglass returned hastily to Rochester from England upon learning of the death of his 11-year-old daughter, Annie. Experience the drama of those emotion-filled days as you join RMSC Players portraying friends and fellow abolitionists on their way to comfort Frederick and Anna Douglass at their daughter’s grave. Follow the pathways of beautiful Mount Hope Cemetery, meeting members of the Circle along the way. In addition to Frederick and Anna Douglass, you'll meet Rochester businessman Austin Steward, Mary Anthony (sister of Susan B. Anthony), Quaker activist Amy Post, Rev. Thomas James (founder of Rochester's AME Zion Church), and others. The story builds to its climax at the world-famous Frederick Douglass grave site.
The two-hour play begins at 10:30am on Saturday, June 23 at the cemetery’s North Gatehouse, located at 791 Mt. Hope Avenue, opposite Robinson Drive. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 3–18. Call (585)697-1942 for reservations.
The program is sponsored by the Friends of Mount Hope Cemetery (www.fomh.org), a volunteer group dedicated to raising awareness of the beauty and history of the cemetery.
Rochester Museum & Science Center (RMSC) receives major funding from Monroe County. RMSC includes a planetarium, nature center and science/regional history museum.
