  • Clark County, Ohio

I'm looking for information about regiments and companies mustered in Clark County, Ohio. I've looked through Stevens's database Ohio in the Civil War and all I've been able to find is the 44th Ohio and the 8th Ohio Calvary. There doesn't seem to be a search option anywhere for his database. If anyone can point me in the right direction to help me on my way I would appriciate it. Thanks for your time

    Dan,

Off the top of my head, I know that the 58th , 110th and 2nd OVI [Company F ] had companies from Clark County. In fact the 110th's National Color is in the Hertiage Center in downtown Springfield. J. Warren Keifer who was a Colonel in the 110th was from Springfield and is buried in Ferncliff Cemetery.

The 44th OVI and the 8th OVC are the one and the same unit. The 44th was mounted in 1863 I believe.

      Re: Clark County, Ohio

Clark County also contributed men to the 5th Ohio Cavalry.

Probably the best (but maybe not definitive) source for Clark County's contributions will be the Clark County version of The Military History of Ohio (Hardesty; New York, Toledo and Chicago:1887). I suspect that if you posted the question on the forum on Larry Steven's website, someone who has a copy will look up the answer for you.

      I hope this helps.

If I'm not mistaken the 44th mounted in '63 then later reenlisted as a Veteran Regiment under the new designation of the 8th OVC.

          Re: Clark County, Ohio

2nd OVI (both 3 month & 3 year service) were the Springfield Zouave Cadets.

          16th OVI Co F, 31st OVI Co K, 42nd OVI Co I,

          11th OVC Co C

          10th OVLA, 16th OVLA, 17th OVLA

All these had men from Clark County

              Re: Clark County, Ohio

              Dan,

Larry Stevens website is a good starting point. Also I use the American Civil War Research Database which is a pay site, but very good for getting the basic info on individual Civil War soldiers

American Civil War Research Database; a database of over 4 million American Civil War Union and Confederate soldiers fully searchable by soldier's name and by regiments. The American Civil War Research Database will assist military tactics, reenactment and genealogy research

Also the books published by the various Ohio Battlefield Commisions in the early 1900's has some good info on indivdual Ohio units.

I like to spend time roaming about in local cemeterys, and by looking at the grave markers you can get a pretty good idea of what units were from your area. Ferncliff Cemetery in Springfield is a good example.

For our area of Ohio one of the best local regimental historys is Greene County Soldiers in the Late War by Ira C. Owens. To my knowldege this book has never been reprinted, but I would bet that the Speingfield library may have a copy.

Two final websites that I have found useful are:

which includes a number of county histories in Ohio.

Hope this helps you get started,

                Re: Clark County, Ohio

Dan, Im the SUVCW Graves Registration Officer for the Ohio Dept so I use many resources in helping to identify and verify soldiers service for our records. The SUVCW is building an on-line database of the burial locations of CW veterans and we are slowly researching and transcribing the records from all over Ohio's 88 counties. When a good portion of a counties burials gets transcribed, it is fairly easy to examine the results and see what units are the most represented. Unfortunately Clark County is in need of volunteers to help do the grave registration research.
One Ohio SUVCW brother named Dan Masters has done some extensive work to attempt to identify where each company in Ohio regiments was primarily raised. Most regiments from Ohio were raised by company so that many units are a mixture of men from different counties. The information I posted was taken from Dans work. I tried to post the link to his webpage but it wouldnt work.
The resources Phil cited are all good, especially the CWdata subscription site which I use daily in verifying soldier's service information.

Please relay my thanks to him. It's a real head-scratcher to figure out who went where in Belmont County, let alone where my father's family was in the Hocking. Practically all the regiments are listed as "formed at Camp Dennison" even when nearly everyone was from the same area. There's the added difficulty of those who enlisted in West Virginia units. If I can help with cemetery visits, checking the Genealogical Society indexes, etc., let me know.

Belmont County. I can also check on anyone buried in the cemeteries near Moundsville in Marshall County, WV, though they're fairly well documented.

To my knowledge I have a pretty complete list of the soldiers buried in Springfield, Ohio with pictures of their headstones. Do you have these already and will these be useful to you?
