Help required: I am trying to find information regarding two ships, The “Evelyn”, bound for Wilmington, and the “Adelaide” bound for Galverston. The information I have comes from a number of sources, John Waite’s book on his grandfather Peter Tait, Van Diver’s “Confederate Blockade Running Through Bermuda 1861-1865, “Lifeline of the Confederacy” and several other minor sources.
The “Evelyn” arrived in Limerick in October 1864, she eventually got into Wilmington with uniforms and boots, supposedly being the last ship to run the blockade there? However, there is no record in such books as “Lifeline of the Confederacy” of her entering or leaving, but one must assume that she did so, as she was last seen in Little River on December 29, 1864. The approximate number of Tait & Co uniforms unloaded by Collie and left in Bermuda was 27 bales, Again there is no record of this in Van Diver’s “Confederate Blockade Running Through Bermuda 1861-1865.
Tait shipped suits from the Confederate contract, plus those of Hebbert & Co. as well as those of Collie, on the “Adelaide” on November 14th. 1864 bound for Galveston. However, as with the “Evelyn” there is no record in such books as “Lifeline of the Confederacy” of her entering or leaving, but one assumes that she did so?
Any news on either of these making landfall would be helpful.
Thank you
