Not sure whether or not this is in the correct forum, but...

Mike Schaffner brought this to my attention. Needless to say, I jumped on it.

"832 pages of the 'United States Army and Navy Journal and Gazette of the Regular and Volunteer Forces,' archived on CD-ROM.

"Sometimes called 'Army and Navy Journal' or 'Armed Forces Journal,' these 52 issues date from August 27, 1864 to August 19, 1865. The Army and Navy Journal was the nation's leading military journal of the time."

Only $15 plus $2 for shipping. A steal at thrice the price.

Re: Army and Navy Journal on CD

That's great...but where are the issues from August 1863 through August 1864?

The A&NJ actually began publication, in August 1863, under the aegis of Captain William C. Church (late of Silas Casey's staff, resigned his commission in June 1863). Alas, I do not know of any truly comprehensive index to this journal, which is a damn shame since there is some terrific stuff therein. I've seen all the issues up through February 1868 as well as some dribs 'n' drabs in later years. I suspect ProQuest Information & Learning (aka University Microfilms International) is now, or is at least considering, putting up this journal in Adobe pdf, much as they've done for the United States Service Magazine, but I'm not privy to their secrets. As some of you likely know, I am currently posting a lengthy series of annotated articles on tactics, drawn from 1865 issues of the A&NJ, in various issues of Civil War Historian. To my knowledge, this is the first time these articles have ever seen the light of day since the heady days of '65.

The Army & Navy Official Gazette (a quasi-official periodical published 1863-1865) is also now in digital form via the online Sabin Americana Collection. It's pretty dry reading, although the court-martial announcements and circulars can be sometimes quite amusing.

      Yours, &c.,

        US Army and Navy Journal

        Hi,

        Two questions regarding archival material.

        1. In an older post ther was mention of the United States Army and Navy Journal being available on CD for the years of 1864/65 I believe. I am unable to find any reference for it outside this range. I am researching the period from 1865 to after the Big Horn battle in 1876, is anyone aware of anything for this later period?

Proably not I suspect, so any hints on either an online source for thiis publication or if not a library/archive in the Southern California area? I don't mind paying if need be for access.

        2. Any ideas for an online source for historical newspapers for the civil war/post civil war period?

Any pointers for the above greatly appreciated
