  • Coastal Campaigns

I'm beginning to start a project on the campaigns of the North Carolina coast for a documentary writing class on the maritime history/culture of north carolina. I plan to focus on the military strategies employed in the island campaigns, their significance for the anaconda plan, the effects on the culture, and their importance for emancipation. Im in the early stages of the research project and was just looking for some simple guidance to useful texts. Im not asking anyone to do research for me, I just wondered if anyone was aware of possible first person accounts of how locals and soliders alike reacted to occupation and occupying in this area specifically. Im certain that something exists out there, but have failed to yield much information on the idea in general. Also, if you could make any suggested readings about the campaigns in general I would really appreciate it.

    Thanks,

    Andrew Marcum

p.s. The paper/research is going to be intense (like 25-30 pages with significant sources hopefully) and I hope to share it here. Any help will be appreciated.

    Re: Coastal Campaigns

    Andrew,

I work at Roanoke Island Festival Park, we cover the Burnside Venture on the Outer Banks a lot. It's kind of my thing. I live two streets down from where he had his HQ on Roanoke Island.

If you'd like I can get a hold of some first person stuff for ya.
You know the Edwin Graves Champney drawings?
(Union soldier did a bunch of the war down here; soldiers, the Cape Hatt.light, etc.)
I just got to handle those original drawings the other day. Idk, I thought it was kinda cool.

Anyway, email me and I can scrape some stuff up if you want.

    I'm ranmargin@AOL.com.

    Good luck with the paper.

Rowena Reed's book, Combined Operations in the Civil War is a good start.
