  • Recruiting Regulations?

For all of those Regulation junkies,

I have a two part question regarding the recruiting regs during the War.

    1. Does anyone know of a reprint of the 1864 Recruiting Regs? I am not expecting much on this... but it doesn't hurt to ask. If not, has anyone ever tracked down or seen an original? I am pretty sure there is one in Recruiting Museum at Ft Knox, but I doubt I will be in the area any time soon.

    2. When was the regulation that preceded the 1864 reg published? Gen Order 105, 1861 stated the changes to the "present" regs for Regular Army enlistments to allow for the filling of vacant spots in volunteer regiments, but it never truly mentions what the "present regulation" consisted of or source it. It does, however, specificly say that all enlistment papers must be made in duplicate. I guess the Amry never changes, they will lose everything except your enlistment papers!

As a side, I did find a supposed original 1864 Regulation for the Recruiting Service on ebay today, but don't think I can convince the wife to part with $200 to get it. Thanks for any help!

    Re: Recruiting Regulations?

To this day, I don't think there are any regulations for recruiting... LOL :D

Many in the Army would agree, too.:p

For real: I had a pretty decent recruiter for the Army, though- she really worked hard to get me what I wanted out of the Army.

Sorry, couldn't resist. Back to the educational topic...

      Re: Recruiting Regulations?

      Hello comrade:

I don't have the '64 recruiting regs, per se, but I can point you to Kautz's Customs of Service for Officers, which has a lengthy section on the recruiting service, including some citations to the regs. The U.S Regulars' "archive" ( http://www.usregulars.com/) has a link to an on-line copy of Kautz's work.

        Re: Recruiting Regulations?

        Pards,

Just to give an update. Since my first post on this thread, believe it or not, I have come down on recruiting orders. I suppose I jinxed myself. This certainly isn't how I planned on spending my last three years in the Army.

As for the recruiting regulations... following the lead that Dan gave me I decided to give the Revised United States Army Regulations of 1861 a quick look. To my delight I found that Article 40 covered recruiting, down to the max number of pens each station is authorized to purchase in a quarter. This is exactly the kind of information I was looking for. Thanks Dan.
