      Awesome pictures. My great x3 grandfather's (Horace T. Hickock - Co. C, 55th Ill) name is listed on the Illinois monument. I'd sure like to see it one day.

        I start to sweat just looking at those pictures. Man was it hot in those trenches. Great Pics!

          Thanks. That's one major battlefield that I've yet to visit. I would love to spend a week there.

            Vicksburg NMP has many beautiful monuments but the Illinois Monument is truly spectacular. I have been fortunate enough to visit there many times over the past several years and I always find something that I missed on previous visits.

                I think the Kansas Monument is really a memorial to those killed in farming accidents. It resembles a piece of antique agricultural equipment that has been through a tornado. As the Great Grandson of a Soldier from a Kansas Regiment and a native Kansan myself I was somewhat dismayed.

                  Actually, the Kansas monument is the only one we have in the park with a plaque explaining what it means. You gotta love modern art...
