I came across this today & thought you might get a chuckle out of it. Apparently sensitive euphemisms aren't a modern invention ... !
Found in the Indiana Muncietonian, April 27, 1850.
Sensibilities as to Names.-- In the Massachusetts State Senate, a motion was made to change the name of the ‘Lyman Reform School,’ as the word ‘Reform’ would cast a stigma on juveniles sent there.
Another member suggested ‘that it would be well in this connection to change the name of the State Prison, and that it be called ‘The Manual Labor Academy for mutual improvement.’’
The Transcript sugggests that instead of ‘pick pocket’ the term ‘abstracting artist’ and for burglar, the phrase ‘untimely visitor.’
