Feb.2,1863 Ltr.from RA Hogaboom Co.D.124th Ill Vols - PLEASE LOOK AT ALL OF OUR LISTINGS. THANKS. An original 2 page ink hand written letter, 5 x 6 3/4 inches copied as it reads:

"February 8th, 1863 I send you these old letters because I hate to destroy them please put them in my thruk for safe keeping until I return home I have as much as I want to carry my portfolio is full. The mail has come without bringing a letter for me but I can stand it. Now iff you will fit up som of that medicine for me (iff you have not already) and send it I would not care iff you should send som firstrate butter that is in a little I would like a couple of handkerchiefs & a towel & half a yard of cotton an old piece that will do for a wash cloth to fix pockets with. Alaska can tell Denises folks & Staples that is in the lodge iff they want to send any thing give them the priviledge but dont send any thing that will spoil in two weeks. A couple of the boys in our tent received a box from home and from the lodge with the express already paid it come very good for they had no money to pay expressage with talk to Staples about it & put in together I think the Lodge ought to do something for their members in the Good Templar regiment they said that they would if we gave them a chance the best way to direct it I think would be to me at Memphis Tenn 124th regt Ill voll Infy Company D Care Capt Brink? The medicine I want you to be sure to send do it up in strong packages so that I can cary them. Now I think that I have written you a good long letter in answer to yours that is a long one. Denis send his respects The drums are beating for dress parade & I must close up I want you all to write when you answer this gibe my best respects & regards & love ma & Hi & Laurie, Harmon & Sophia & Franne & Deal and Alaska will give my reguards to the members of the Lodge Mrs Staples Mr Jelliff and the girls that I am acquainted with. Jim Cornish also. Thank them for all the Whiskey rations they sent to me we three do not break our pledge & our health is generaly good You will except much love from a son & Brother. RAH".

Over 15 years ago we purchased Robert A. Hogaboom's Civil War material. This was one of a number of his letters. He was from Oneida, Illinois. We still have a few misc. items including some Knights Templar pieces, a few more letters (most to him from home), odd relics he mailed home, and some family cdvs that came with the lot. He later served with the 66th USCT as a Sergeant in the later part of the conflict. An iteresting letter that tells of items he was in need of while in the 124th Illinois Volunteers

    Really neat,

Not often you see the IOGT mentioned in Civil War letters.
