I know that a fife was a popular instrument during Civil War, but I've been asked to bring my flute along to the next reenactment to play at Sunday Service to accompany my daughter (who plays the viola, she's 14). Would having this shiny instrument be correct? We do allow spectators in during this service, and I would HATE to have someone say something about it. And no, I can't play the fife as well as the flute - I've been trying, and it's not working!
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Re: Flute

    Shiny isn't a problem. :)

My question would be: what denomination allowed string/flute duets during Sunday services, mid-century? I'm not personally aware of any Christian sect that allowed music beyond vocal and piano/organ at mid-century.

Then the second question would be--how common would it be for a young girl to play a viola in your region, and in church; and then, how common would it be for a female to play the flute in public?
