Re: The Overdone Songs of the Civil War

    Paul.....
Thank's for the response. Yes, I read the AC everyday and always look for your and Wil's postings. They are always fun and Wil's contributions are priceless. I always learn something.

Back to the thread though....the flip side of overdone songs, or perhaps overdone camp music, is the under-representation of other aspects. Even the overdone songs can be made new again with some decent presentation. When was the last time we saw anyone master the jawbone or washboard? And too, when was the last time we heard a decent triangle...something more in the Louisiana style of this cherished instrument? In a world of banjos, fiddles, bones, fifes & drums, all of which are well represented in the hobby (....perhaps overdone), bring on the jawbone and the triangle!!! Or as was once said "More Cowbell !!!"

As fer overdone, Year of Jubilo is up there....Of course, if you sing "The Patriotic Contraband" or "Camp Gals" you can keep the tune, with period correct, alternate lyrics.

For about ten years my camp band featured the Master of Mandibular Manipulation (jawbone playing): Rich Bauer. Unfortunately he left us in 2007 to play with the Angel Band.
