  • Anybody from Central PA want to give fiddle lessons? (Harrisburg, Lancaster, York)

I REALLY want to learn the fiddle and play traditional tunes. I enjoy all styles, but I am most into Irish style fiddle playing. I currently live in Mount Joy, PA (Lancaster County) and work outside of Harrisburg. I have a beginners violin I bought cheap on Ebay, but would eventually like to buy a decent, period or antique. If anyone is in the area PLEASE contact me. This has been my dream for some years now and it is time.

    Thanks,
    Andy Wildman

    Andy,

I'm sorry that you have not had any replys to your request for a fiddle instructor. I would be glad to be of assistance but I'm in northern Ohio and it would be impractical due to travel distances. My sugestion is to check out this web site: the Fiddle Hangout.com. There are fiddlers from all over the country & world on there. I'm sure you could hook up with someone from your area who can help you. Best of luck on your fiddlin jurney!

I am a fiddler myself, and although I am in TN, I can give you one piece of advice...a bad fiddle and bow will retard your progress more than anything else...There are, however some decent sounding chinese made fiddles available. I would recommend going to a music store, most of the time they will be able to recommend you a teacher, who can in turn recommend a fiddle...be very wary of purchasing any musical instrument off the internet, as the most important thing is sound quality, which you have no way of verifying.

          Hi Andy,

Sorry for my late response. While I am not a fiddler, I live in Lancaster (and for a time lived in Maytown). Small world! Anyway, every now and then a small group of us from the Lancaster area get together and play Civil War minstrel stuff or Irish stuff or the last event we did we played Christmas carols. We call ourselves the Maytown 1860 Centennial Band. Right now we have two fiddles, a guitar, banjo, percussion, and me with penny whistle/fife. Jeanne Cassidy is one of the fiddle/violin players and may be interested in helping you out. Message me if you want her contact info.
