Tough to tell without a date but there are some hints. I believe it is Crimean War / Civil War era. I think it is a French drummer rather than an American. Originally, Zouaves were European Frenchmen .......as opposed to ethnic Arabs.... raised in the French North African colonies. Note his drum is brass ........rare in American drums of the period but more common in French instruments. Facial hair (beard) suggests an earlier image rather than a later post civil-war era when less facial hair became the fashion.
I, too, would be inclined to vote Crimean-era because of the accouterments and length of the leggings over the instep, the striping on the turban (an affectation copied in limited numbers by the cadre that would form the 114th PA) and the unique cross-hatch braid on the cuff. The salutation inscribed on the back is in English, however, which is a mystery.
