    I guess there's no way of authentically denying use of mandolins for a soldier's field impression. Came up again this past week that "they existed in the U.S., there's period civilian images of them here and they were just as portable as fiddles." This time from a Confederate impression.

    I suppose all we can really say is that neither gourd banjos or mandolins are particularly PEC for a field soldier impression, but I'm not recommending anything at all - haven't found enough evidence either way. Anybody else?

      Too bad its a PM - I was looking forward to some primary research on the subject - I haven't come across any substantial documentation on this instrument for civil war soldiers.
