  • Sesquicentennial Event in Frankfort, KY - Cornets and Cannons

One of the first major events of the Civil War Sesquicentennial will be Cornets and Cannons: the Civil War Sesquicentennial Music Festival.

The festival will be in Frankfort, Kentucky September 1-4, 2011. Musical ensembles, individual performers, and scholars from across the eastern United States will participate. Brass bands will include the Wildcat Band, the Federal City Brass Band, Olde Towne Brass and Saxton's Cornet Band. Camp Chase Fifes and Drums will represent field music, and Helen Beedle will perform on the piano. A specially formed string band will also perform. The festival will feature concerts, scholarly and "how-to" presentations about Civil War era military and popular music, a parade, a grand ball and a climactic "battle of the bands" - all in historic downtown Frankfort. All components of the event will be free. Living history enthusiasts who wish to attend in period clothing may camp in period style at the Leslie Morris Park on Fort Hill (advance reservations required). This event is supported by the Kentucky Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission, the Kentucky Historical Society, the Kentucky Arts Council, the Kentucky Civil War Sites Association, the Frankfort/Franklin County Tourism Commission, and the City of Frankfort's Department of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Sites.
