    Winning bid: US $787.77

According to the seller, this style of sticks and sling are from the "Civil War", even though they are identical to 20th century French slings/sticks. A similar set sold for $780 in 2005 and he references Warman's.

I guess we can assume the seller does not know any better and is just going by Warman's

But now he has two more items for a sale: a similar sling/stick set and a French drum.

This is, of course, not the first time French sticks have been passed off as Civil War and sold at auction. There's a huge supply of these old sticks in France. But there is only one photo of a drummer using this type sling in the Civil War and that is the 1st Lousiana.

Some professional dealers and auctioneers are just as ignorant as ebay sellers. Ebay's not the problem.

I don't know much about drums, but I do note that I have an old Thompson & Odell catalog (Boston) from about 1910, who are "successors to Ira White," both the sticks and sling look very much like what is in this catalog. Caveat emptor!

When I lived in Connecticut, I used to go to antique auctions, where the auctioneer would start the bidding on some piece of junk, and when he got no response would say "Buy it for what you think it is, you can always paint it black and put an eagle on it and have yourselves a fine antique!"
