  • Rosalie, The Prarie Flower.

This 1855 song by George F. Root is not often heard today, but was quite popular at the time. I got a banjo version of it from Christy's Minstrel's Banjo Tutor published in 1863. This tutor has not been made available to modern stroke-style banjo players as have the several other period banjo instruction manuals. It's a great book, though, with several important tunes that have not been arranged for banjo elsewhere.

Root's psuedonym was George Wurtzel, and he was the author of Civil War classics such as The Battle Cry of Freedom, Just Before the Battle Mother, and Tramp, Tramp, Tramp.
