“Frog In the Well”

“Frog In the Well” is based on the folk song “Froggie Went A-courting.” The tune first appeared in the 1611 publication “Melismata – Musicall Phansies Fitting the Court, Citie, and Countrey Humours, To 3, 4, and 5 Voyces.” The first line of the lyrics was: “Twas the Frog in the well… And the merry Mouse in the mill.” This version is from “Col. H.C. Hart’s New and Improved Instructor for the Drum” and includes both the fife and drum parts.

Actually you don't have to go back that far. Frog in the Well is just Hart's alternate title to the minstrel song "Keemo Kimo." It would have been more appropriate to call it "Frog in the Pool." He even wrote "Kymeo" next to the Frog title (messed that up too). But it would be interesting to look into that old 17th cent. tune and see if there are more similarities to Keemo Kimo.
