The mouth bow has been around for centuries. They were popular in southern Appalachia during the 19th century. From what I've seen they range from complex to fairly simple. I was wondering if anyone has found any reference to them being played by soldiers during the war. I haven't been able to find any references myself but it would make sense if this was an instrument used back home that they may have found their way into military camps. They wouldnt have been too hard to make and one would be easier to carry with you than a banjo or a fiddle. Its somewhat of an old instrument so I'm curious if anybody even knows what I'm talking about.
