  • "Amplified Fiddle" photo

    This image is decidedly post-Civil War, but it's one of the damndest musical instrument photos I've ever seen. We can only wonder if somebody tried something similar with, say, guitars in the "Pre-Rock & Roll Era." From all appearances, the technology for "acoustic amplification" certainly existed by the 1860's.

    They were often used in early recordings.
    Various reproductions of this violin are still available. Some looking more like a violin with a trumpet bell added . . .
