  • Happy Birthday, Adelicia Acklen

I only found out about this today, but tomorrow evening, Monday, March 12, at 7:30 there will be a concert of sheet music owned by Adelicia Acklen, possibly the craftiest and wealthiest woman in the south at the end of the Civil War. The concert is in honor of her upcoming 190th birthday. It will feature the Belmont Camerata Musicale and will be held in Belmont Mansion.

She was a fascinating gal and very savvy business woman, playing both ends against the middle and turning situations around to profit her.

I visited Belmont about 5 years ago. The story about her and how she managed to prosper was pretty fascinating.

What an enjoyable two hours! The concert was wonderful. There's something about seeing a grand piano in the alcove of Adelicia's grand salon that just looks natural. It fit perfectly. The only song that was sung by voice was "The Ballad of Johnny Sands"! Hilarious! Written in 1842, it's a comedy about a married couple intent on doing each other in...Mockingbird Theatre/Melodians material!
