Fellow Drummers

Howes manual pg 2 mentions India rubber drum covers. Does anyone have any ideas on how these migh have been made? What kind of closure?

Is there a source for India rubber cloth by the yard?

I have done search after search and I can't find any information on the covers. I have wondered myself.
