    Great image!!


    I have never seen a bass drum sling (or strap) like that before on a period image. Has anyone else any info on it?

      I bet those neck slings would really hurt after a while. Neck sling for a snare is no problem, but you would want a better design if you had to carry a bass drum on a march.

      Here is another CW era bass drum sling. Both styles of bass drum slings can be found in Elrod and Garafolo's book. This type goes around the back and forms an 'X' then over the shoulders and attaches near the chest.

          I swear it looks like jute upholstery webbing, which was a perfect fit for my Committee of Safety bayonet carriage.

              I have been unable to find a supplier for striped webbing. The jute webbing I have seen is too thick. Besides, it should be cotton or linen. Was the jute webbing you mentioned bleached? Perhaps if it were bleached then it would pass for linen or cotton. The jute I have seen is brown.

                Sir, the jute webbing that you are describing is meant for upholstry. My husband does a good deal of this, and oddly enough, the webbing stripe that is in the modern weaves is just about identical to those straps that support horsehair within upholstry. I'd avoid the jute webbing.
