Notes: (apologies to long time AC's): - Seeing "The Elephant" usually meant you had experienced combat. The subject of the song was 1863 -Union commander of the Department of the Gulf, General Nathan Banks, pushed a Confederate force up the Teche Bayou and marched to Alexandria, Louisiana, hauling off slaves, cattle, and whatever cotton not destroyed by retreating Confederates under General Richard Taylor and overall command of Kirby Smith.
But by 1864 Taylor defeated Banks and forced him to withdraw. Smith then directed Taylor elsewhere, allowing Bank’s force to escape.
