I love this picture as Fredericksburg is my favorite Civil War location and topic. I've always found it remarkable that there seems to be a great deal of dark colors! I also see a lot of epaulettes and even darker pants. Probably RD you think? I also noticed something new...the guy right in the middle I believe is wearing a forage cap...but it doesn't look like federal pattern....were these ever RD issue?

I've never heard of the Richmond Depot issuing forage caps, only kepis and believe it or not, slouch hats!

I haven't either....this is a blank spot for me...how would this soldier have obtained a forage cap with that pattern. They show up in various pictures throughout the war (like the one I have on in my Avatar). I think the kepis in the picture are the RD type right?

The fellow in the rear of left center looks like he has some sort of worded patch on the front of his slouch hat. He also looks to be a pretty big guy. Look at the shoulder width compared to the two men in front of him!
The guy to the bottom right of the officer in the double breasted frock appears to be wearing straight up civilian attire. Looks to me like a dark colored sack or shorter frock with possibly a velvet or plush collar, vest, boots, and shirt with cravat. That guy to the left of the officer appears to be wearing a 4 button sack...pretty interesting.

He could be wearing a civilian sack coat. He also might be a wearing a 4 button infantry shell jacket. Although it does not seem to have the slash pocket, and the buttons seem a little too low. Does anyone know what year the photo was taken in? Is it December of 1862 or is it some time in 1863.
And apparently one guy standing in the back row looks to be wearing a RD 2type shell with trimmed cuffs and collar and a cuff button to boot!, I also always thought that one guy with a cap was wearing gaiters!
The four button jacket could be a way too large "T V Brooke" type jacket
Great photo of mid war confederates!
It is far more realy dark jackets/Uniforms then light colored, most does have shoulder straps!!, I wonder if some of those trowsers are in fact black?
Many dark hats also and forage caps, maybe the civilian dressed guy is a officer too!!
It is a great photo, pitty we cant enhance more!!, is it some way to clean it up for more deitail maybe?
