Re: Image
The speculation on ebay antiques never ceases to amaze me. What makes these men outlaws? Just because they aren't spit and polish they're on the fringe of society? If they were handsomely dressed I'm sure they'd be sold as a "gay" couple along with all the other dags and ambrotypes of well dressed men posed together. People will buy anything, like the original clothing that's "haunted".Ian McWherter

Re: Image
First, let me say that the horizontal alignment of this image is really weird. Maybe it was cut down from a larger one to fit in this case? It just seems really strange.
Either they spotted the same ready-made coat in a store and decided it would be fun to each get one, or they are in some kind of organization. (Or, my eyes deceive me and they are not identical coats.) Either of the last two are the more likely, of course. It could be a militia uniform, though here's another reason this whole thing is strange- Usually any HINT of uniform in a period or near-period image doubles the price. Add in that the uniform is not cleary U.S. Army (meaning most uninformed people wil immediately conclude CONFEDERATE) and you can take it X10. But this image went for forty-some dollars? And there was no reserve?
For a moment, I wondered if it wasn't a modern image of reenactors. But two things dissuaded me from that- 1) there are no accoutrements or weapons in view- in my experience reenactors are rarely willing to pay to have their image made without looking far more martial than most period images, and 2) one of the men is clean-shaven, which while common among mainstreamers, is rare among the type of men who would care to have such an image struck.
I can't put my finger on it, but I am still suspicious of this image for some reason. My gut tells me that you were better off not winning this auction.
And of course, the "outlaws" thing is ridiculous.Arch Campbell
