  • What an Officer!

Aside from this guy's obviously healthy proportions, check out his pleated frock coat. Looks like 6 buttons down the front, and from the folds under the belt it looks to be a relatively lightweight material. Nice hat, too! Yeow!

Chickahominy River, Va. Grapevine bridge, by the 5th New Hampshire Infantry, May 27-28, 1862. LOC#: LC-B817- 7383

Great photo. Nice example of period long handled shovels as well.

I need to get a couple of those...

Troy, if you're interested here is a photographic compilation I did of tools in period photos. It includes several other close ups of tools being used in the Grapevine Bridge photo: http://www.libertyrifles.org/research/tools.html

Thanks, Russell. I didn't intend this to turn into a thread on tools, but here is another examination I did on tools if you are interested in the subject: http://www.libertyrifles.org/research/dugtools.html

Paul, thank you for the links. Very nice presentation. Sorry for derailing this thread.

I suppose I'm just more prone to work an ax or shovel than wear a fancy officer's coat. ;-) (Although pleated officer's coats are pretty cool...)

It seems he has a velvet collar as well. His figure makes me think he hasn't seen a hard campaign in a loong time. Maybe he needs to lay off the salt pork ;)

                Hi,

Great photo!!!! Is that a crop from a photo, or is it the full photo? If it is a crop from a photo, can you post the full photo. Thanks.
