  • Soldier/Fireman/Policeman What?

    Folks.

Curious if anyone has any ideas as to what this man might be, from the Library of Congress.

    Re: Soldier/Fireman/Policeman What?

I'll own that I am way out of my depth here; that said, a firefighter comes to mind given the word "DELUGE" on his cap. Engine/hook and ladder/ hose companies &cet sometimes had "aquatic-themed" names such as "Oceanus", "Cataract", "Atlantic" & the like...could be a company name and number...

Matter of fact, a Google search of "Deluge Fire Company" produces several such hits...a little more digging may produce a Deluge XYZ Company No. 6 somewhere.

Thanks for responding; I sort of thought it might be a fireman given the "DELUGE" on his totally awesome cap, but I was not sure.

I have to agree with Tom. The 'DELUGE' on the cap suggests Fire Dept.
We had a one time, in my local FD a leather helmet with that on it along with one that had "LADDER" on it. It's a great pix any way you look at it.

There was a whole chapter in the 1996 issue (I think that's the date) of the Daguerreian Annual of fireman images. Many were wearing overshirts very similar or identical to that man's shirt with similar slogans on their caps.

Absolutley a Firefighter. In my firehouse there was a picture from the 1870's or 1880's that had the subjects wearing a very similar cap and jacket standing next to a hand drawn hand pumper. They put the picture in a local museum. The hand pumper in the pic and some uniforms are on display in East Rockaway, NY. Very cool image.

What type of jacket is he wearing?

                  Re: Soldier/Fireman/Policeman What?

Variants of the "fireman" style overshirt functioned similarly to double-breasted frock coats, and could be worn open, buttoned back on itself, as in this case, where it reveals a lighter colored facing.

Here's a similar uniform from my museum's collection, Captain William Wagner, Germania Fire Company, Oshkosh, Wisconsin, circa 1859.
