  • 7th NYSM with TENT POLES!!

My unconditional love for the 7th NY Militia notwithstanding, there's a great one on the 'bay now, showing the pack incorporating a rolled greatcoat, folded blanket, and what appear to be collapsible shelter tent poles.

I know the guy selling it too. He's always got great stuff...you might say he's an artist/historian.

"The guy selling it" picked up this and several other choice items from a collection that was gathered before the 1960's and has been packed away since then. Nothing cheap, but a chance to see some prime items that seldom see daylight of late.

Don told me about his acquisition of Lewis Parmelee's 7th N.Y.S.M. uniform and equipment...he has what I think is unbelievable patience in obtaining original items for his collection. There was recently a signed carte of Parmelee on eBay showing him in his pre-war uniform. I tried my best to win it with the intention of seeing if Don might have wanted it for his Parmelee grouping.

Since I have them on hand, here are a few images of Parmelee. He was commissioned into the 2nd U.S.S.S. as adjutant and was killed in action at Antietam while trying to rally the 2nd. He was shot down close to the fence near the Hagerstown Pike after grabbing the regimental colors.

Any idea what the pin on his USSS coat is?

                Marc,

I'm not certain. Even with the gigantor-sized images from the Library of Congress I haven't been able to make out the details. Perhaps it's an ID badge of some kind.

I tend to agree on this one. It appears to one of those private purchase ID badges..perhaps silver or maybe even enameled.

The badge in question seems a tad too small to be an ID badge.Perhaps it's some sort of patriotic or Masonic badge?
