  • Reversed Hat Brass

Check this dude out... he has an infantry horn on the side of his dress hat, and the Jeff Davis Eagle on the front top (similar to a shako).

The hat likely had the "old army fit." Too big. Sideways would fit better. Neither hat appears to be too lived in based upon the brims being fairly straight and the crowns still reaching up to the sky. Still, a great photo or zoomed section from a larger photo.

Mark: yep, maybe. A 90° turn of the hat would have the brass make sense. Too bad we can't see the ribbon's bow to make a conclusion.

Also, here's another photo showing a man using what appears to be an embroidered infantry horn to pin up the side of the hat. You can see the faint outline of the oval patch. (Also note the bare foot behind him)

        Paul,

Good catch on the reversed hat brass image...I always love seeing strange little things like that.

The second image you posted is great as a whole; if I remember correctly the guns are being manned by a bunch of barefoot soldiers. I also see that the two visible men are wearing unlined blouses; must have been fairly warm.

          Hi Brian,

Yeah the second photo is interesting... the guy to the rear of the gun is barefoot and has no cap or hat... looks like he just woke up! haha. I speculate that the dudes are Infantryman, given that it looks like they are trying to emulate the stances of Artilleryman around that captured gun, and of course the infantry horn on the seated fellow.

See the guy with no shoes in back of the embroidered hat-patch man? Hmmm.
