Can anyone provide me with any info and/or a link to the photo on the cover of McPherson's 'For Cause and Comrades'? It's not credited adequately in the book. Thanks!

Re: Image from McPherson's 'For Cause and Comrades'
Sir,
The only source I knew of was in Shadows of the Storm, Vol. 1, The Image of War 1861-1865. There are four different images (including the one on the McPherson book) on pp. 46-47. According to this source they are the 1st Virginia Militia "Richmond Greys" at the time of John Brown's trial and hanging. They did not participate in the caprture, but they made it to Charles Town, Va. to form the square around the gallows. To answer your question they are credited to the Valentine Museum, Richmond, Va.

"I stood for a time and cried as freely as boys do when things hurt most; alone among the dead, then covered his face with an old coat I ran away, for I was alone passing dead men all about as I went".
