What a coat! Suppose it's bear fur with sheep skin trim?

My wife's great grandfather was a Union private detailed as a teamster to drive over the Cumberland mountains in the bitter cold of February 1864.

      Grampa? Is that you? :)

        Re: Teamster

Peter Malarkin of Company A of the 57th Georgia was detailed as Division Teamster on August 23, 1862, as he went over the Cumberlands.......

Based on recent experience, I'm betting This Ain't Him.

What intrigues me beyond the coat is the star shaped buttons or whatever they are under it, anyone have any idea what they are?

The stars appear to be embroidered onto the placate of his shirt, underneath the coat. I must have one!

Ah, at first blush I thought he was wearing another coat (sack coat perhaps) under that fur coat. But now I do notice the buttons of a waist coat lower down.

                Hallo!

                It is interesting...

The stars appear, possibly, maybe to be applique's sewn over the buttons holes. The size and spacing of the buttons might could appear to be that of a mounted services type jacket whose collar had been docked. But, wearing a "civilian" vest (although the buttons could possible be small US eagles) for added warmth OVER a jacket is a might odd. But we do have Period images of lads who tuck their fatigue blouses into their trousers...

                :)
