  • Civil War soldiers with fireman helmet

OK, here's one for the Illinois boys AND the Firemen! Go figure! The image is being sold out of Wisconsin, but the fellow with the fireman's hat looks like he's wearing an Illinois jacket.

I bid on this photo. Being a Fireman my self I wanted this photo but the auction ended while I was at work and I had no access to a computer. The image is reversed as the 3 on his helmet shield is backward. As to the state in which it was sold means nothing. I have seen union stuff in So.Carolina and Confederate stuff in PA. way North of G-burg. We have had 150 years to travel. I noticed that the man with out the helmet is wearing a Dark color frock. My first thought was they are Union Troops. The man with the helmet is wearing a shell jacket. Could they be Confederate wearing dark grey jackets? Lighting played tricks on the exposure of black and white photos. I don't know enough about Illinois State Uniforms. But I am going to do some research. I hope others read this thread and put in their 2 cents. Interesting photo. Maybe someone can enhance the photo so we can read the shield on his helmet, that would be a dead giveaway.
