    Cullen,

Here are the rest of them; I don't know if they're still adding images each week though.

The Prints and Photographs Online Catalog (PPOC) contains catalog records and digital images representing a rich cross-section of still pictures held by the Prints & Photographs Division and, in some cases, other units of the Library of Congress. The Library of Congress offers broad public access to these materials as a contribution to education and scholarship.

Anyone know anything about the uniforms in this image? Looks like a five button sack coat with collars being worn upright and some sort of state buttons. Don't think I've seen these before.

On the image of the young lad, with lock of hair, there is a note. (image here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...T2010110503437)

Can anyone make out the last line. The next to last reads (I think) "flights of angels rising". Would love to know how the poem ends.

Flights of angels sing thee to thy rest. The line is from Hamlet, the full quote being "Good night, sweet prince, and flights of angels sing thee to they rest!"

                A quick search of "Flights of angels" came up with a line from Hamlet: "Now cracks a noble heart. Good-night, sweet prince;
And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest." It looks to me like that's what is written.

Some great snippets from this new treasure trove:

                  1) Oh no! Federals fighting for the Southern Nation!
(From "Nine unidentified soldiers in Union uniforms and forage caps, eight with bayoneted muskets and one with a drum" LC-DIG-ppmsca-27547)

                  2) Interesting bedroll... How many of these will we see at our next event?
(From "Three unidentified soldiers in front of painted backdrop showing 34-star American flag" LC-DIG-ppmsca-27541)

                  3) Full sets of English gear. The caption says 6th Massachusetts, but one of the caps looks to have a brass '3'.
(From "Five unidentified soldiers in Union uniform of the 6th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Militia outfitted with Enfield muskets in front of encampment" LC-DIG-ppmsca-27124 )

Check the left elbow in the high resolution .tiff. Good example of patching.

Though it was a just some damage to the image at first but in high res you can see the stitches.

Awesome eye! It also is a lighter color than the sack coat, and has a much nappier texture.

Perhaps he took some kersey from a great coat to patch the hole, maybe trimming off the cape?

                        Re: Great images

I also noticed in that same image that if you look at his left shoulder(the image is mirrored) the twill in the fabric is visible, seems this coat might have had pretty pronounced nap overall and on the shoulder it has been worn down a bit by a cartridge box sling. Also, is his left thumb bandaged?

I've been looking at the fabric in alot of the closer up portraits because in the high resolution some of these images reveal amazing detail. I will try to upload images of some of the things I found interesting when I get the time. I'm actually pretty surprised at how much nap you see on some of the sack coats.

A good look at the material and also the sleeves seem to be attached differently on each arm:

                          Fabric details:

Fabric detail and block "I" button:

This blouse has a pretty noticeable nap:

                          Badly stitched blouse:

"Puffy" sleeves and a heavier nap:

Hope some of this was of interest. That collection of photos is truly priceless, I'm glad the LOC acquired them.
