The fellow on the right in this image shows a really good example of an altered fatigue blouse to jacket, plus the alterations made to his trouser pockets to French or mule ear pockets.

Re: Altered Uniform
Cool, photo! I like the alterations at the waist and the additional buttons. It also appears that sleeve linings are absent, as well.
To add one, in researching the 1st Connecticut Heavy Artillery for a living history we had at Dutch Gap, Va., I found a couple of examples (LC-DIG-cwpb-03598) of alterations (rather, "additions") to the fatigue blouse. In two visible examples, rather large outer pockets were sewn on. And a corporal, had a dark color trim at the pocket opening. Also, the sergeant's blouse was also shortened at the waist.Jason C. Re: Altered Uniform
Scott,
The trousers aren't necessarily altered to have French style pockets. There are several original pairs of Federal trousers made with this style of pocket, notably three pairs in the Troiani collection (J.T. Martin, Schuylkill Arsenal, and an unknown contract pair worn by Pvt. Edgar Yergarson) as well as a pair owned several years ago by a collector in Indiana. The latter pair were made by SA but had a unique watch pocket that was simply an extension of the French pocket facing/bag. Photos below.Brian White
