Here is another image I ran across on line that shows who I believe is a member of the New York State Militia wearing what might be a knit sack coat like the other image on page 1. Notice he has his hand in a pocket on the lower left of the coat just as in the other photo mentioned.
Marc and John, thanks for posting those photos. The former is most definitely a gray "Aspinwall" knit blouse. The latter appears to be a crocheted or knit vest.

Here are totals from the Quartermaster General Report dated June 30, 1865, that list the total knit sack coats and what arsenal they were received. This is totals from 1861 to the end of the war but I am sure there are somethings listed wrong.
Sack Coat, knit: 530,144 all received at New York Arsenal.
I do not have the complete document but just pieces a friend gave me.
