      Thanks Eric,

That is a very interesting sweater indeed. So who's up for reproducing that?

Haha yeah. It looks just like those popular pullover sweaters everyone used to wear in the late 80's. Of course you would immediately be called a farb and Mr.Rogers if you wore that to an event!

Just thought you might like to see the Civil War Mr. Rogers look.

Is it just me, or is the second fellow from the left wearing a knit vest? Could it be corduroy?

Yes - looks like corduroy but doesn't seem to wrinkle like it. Hard to say! But I do love what they are sitting on, and the table too.

I think it may either be corduroy or even a striped material that is causing the illusion of corduroy.

Here is another image I ran across on line that shows who I believe is a member of the New York State Militia wearing what might be a knit sack coat like the other image on page 1. Notice he has his hand in a pocket on the lower left of the coat just as in the other photo mentioned.

Marc and John, thanks for posting those photos. The former is most definitely a gray "Aspinwall" knit blouse. The latter appears to be a crocheted or knit vest.

                            Re: Another Knit Sack Coat

Here are totals from the Quartermaster General Report dated June 30, 1865, that list the total knit sack coats and what arsenal they were received. This is totals from 1861 to the end of the war but I am sure there are somethings listed wrong.

Sack Coat, knit: 530,144 all received at New York Arsenal.

I do not have the complete document but just pieces a friend gave me.
