  • Confederate Soldier

My uncle who is really into genealogy just came across this photo of my gg grandfather, Jackson Hilliard Randolph out of Jefferson, Georgia.
My uncle says he was in the 16th Georgia but I'm having trouble verifying. There is a H.J. Randolph listed here: http://www.researchonline.net/gacw/rosters/16infg.htm

I thought his long hair was a little interesting.
What is going on with his jacket? Is he wearing two or is that a vest?

    Re: Confederate Soldier

Kevin, I looked up "Randolph" for the 16th Georgia using the solider and sailor website: http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.cfm

There is a H.J. Randolph and a Hill J. Randolph. Hill J. Randolph is listed as an sergeant. So there is some more fun for you in your search.

        Re: Confederate Soldier

It looks like to me like he is wearing a coat and an overcoat.

Kevin, he could be wearing some kind of vest underneath his coat. That's my first impression, but that' just me. I need to research my Georgia folks too, especially since I named my son for that side of my family. ;)

            Re: Confederate Soldier

I think it's a vest although I have seen some photos of Alabamians/Georgians wearing overcoats that look similar. Rough jeans or homespun double-breasted vest with a square fall down collar. Attached here is a carte from my collection showing a similar garment although it's single breasted. An interesting aside is that this photo was taken in Montgomery, Alabama and I believe might be a member of a "home guard" organization. Another portrait signed "J.M. Thorp, AVC" was taken by the same photographer and both men look the same age and are wearing identical trousers and vests.

              Re: Confederate Soldier

              Great stuff guys, thanks.

My whole family is from Jackson County so I think all of those Randolphs are relates of some kind.

              Dixieflyer,
I named one of my sons after my gggg Grandfather on the other side, William Andrews. My son is William Andrews Whitehead. My other son is Thomas Jackson Whitehead and we call him Jack. It was an exciting find to see that this guy was named Jackson. After looking through my geneology that my uncle has done there are a ton of Williams, Thomas', and Jacks so it cool that there is a Jackson too.
