That looks like a Hardee Hat Ostrich plume on his head. I have an original Plume and it looks similar. Just a thought...

When I look at this head gear/hat/cap/etc..... I see a Scottish bonnet of very dark blue or black, that has been pushed back off the forehead and face to get a better picture. In doing this the front has been flipped up. To the left of the Hardee Ostrich plume I think i can see a small bow, that was standard on most of these bonnets. Could "Canfield" be a Scottish or maybe Irish name? Lots of Irish in the Boston area!!!

According to the 1850 US Census, Both of his parents were also born in Massachusetts. They were living in New Marlborough, Berkshire County.

I also noticed this morning that the auction ended without anyone bidding on it.

A fur cap would make more sense as he has an overcoat in the photo.
