  • Confederate or Union or both?

Hi list, could use some help.. We were looking at this image on another forum, and are undecided of what it actually shows..The description from the LOC states Confederate prisoners, but some sure do look Union.. Any thoughts? Could there be Union troops intermingled and visiting POWs? There is a definite lack of weapons and cartridge and cap boxes in this group..

The forum thread where you can see more images is

Re: Confederate or Union or both?

It could just be a confusing label in that these are 'prisoners' that belong to the Confederates hence, "Confederate prisoners" and not necessarily prisoners that ARE Confederates. Not sure if that makes sense to anyone else but me, but these boys look very Federal to me...

Re: Confederate or Union or both?

That thought had occured to me, but there are other images in this series that do show armed Union troops and unarmed Southern prisoners..
There is one part of the original that does show two armed Union men...

Just a thought but could this group pf men be actually Yankees under guard for something, like deserting or other crimes? Or prisoners up for exchange?

This subject has already been discussed at great length back in 2008.

I have also seen this photo captioned as Federals going on furlough.
