I'm partially responsible for getting the seller to change the regimental ID for that image. It was originally listed as a 79th New York "Highlander" but I pointed out the difference in headgear (tam vs. glengarry), the back mark, and that the soldier might be wearing an early Illinois issue gray state jacket. I told the seller that this was likely a member of the 12th Illinois. There is another photograph of a 12th Illinois soldier wearing a similar style tam in the Liljenquist Collection at the Library of Congress website.

Its too bad most of these pictures are unidentified. I had two great uncles in the 12th Illinois Infantry. They were still wearing these gray uniforms when they were at Ft. Donelson. One of the uncles was killed on February 15th. makes me wonder if they were getting shot at from BOTH sides because of that.Louis Zenti
