  • Ninth Corps Mechanics, October 1864, Alternate View Found!

I found this for sale on eBay this morning while replying to a customer email about an alternate portrait of the same men. Both links are below and depict mechanics of the 1st Division, Ninth Corps at Petersburg, October 1864, at work and for a seated portrait in front of the same tent. Take a close look; those men are the same.

I contacted the seller twice about his albumen but he still seems to believe that it's an Antietam/1862 view. I even pointed out the use of corps badges; two or three enlisted men have the over-sized Ninth Corps badges while the officer is wearing a stamped metal fouled anchor/cannon badge on his hat, neither of which were authorized until April 1864.

Most of them seem to be wearing some variant of an issue shirt, nice images!

Man, dig that contraption they are usin' to shoe that horse; a belly band has the horse suspended in the air and it's feet are strapped to a rail underneath it. I think some leftist-liberal-PETA type peaople would call that cruel!
