That's a nice one! Just saw it this morning. Interesting use of a US plate on his shoulder belt, I can't recall seeing that method before. I have a feeling that he may be an early war Federal state volunteer or militiaman. Plenty of early New England and western volunteer uniforms were gray.Brian White

It does have a US-ish look to it. But the space between the two "letters" has a higher degree of detail that suggests a figure with an outstretched arm. Perhaps a Massachusetts plate?Steve Pelikan
