Re: A Close-Up Image - Unidentified Group of Federal Soldiers

The image was taken in early 1864 at Blue Springs, Tennessee, near Cleveland. It is part of a series of images taken there by an Ohio photographer. I wrote a couple of magazine articles on these images many years ago. I don't have access to them at this moment, so I can't share all the details.

When you get access you should post it. I would be interested to read it.

I also think it interesting as to how many vests can be seen on those enlisted men with open jackets.

Re: A Close-Up Image - Unidentified Group of Federal Soldiers

This image was taken in April 1864 at Blue Springs, Tennesse near Cleveland. A series of images were taken by a photographer named Sweeney, depicting many of the companies in William Grose's 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, 4th Army Corps. This was the only brigade posted at this location. The buildings in the background were used as commissary supply and brigade headquarters. The identified images of the 44th and 9th Indiana were all taken at the same location. The brigade was composed of the following regiments: 59th, 75th, 80th, and 84th Illinois Infantry; 9th, 30th, 36th, and 84th Indiana, and the 77th Pennsylvania. Note: the 21st Michigan was not attached to this brigade, which is why I have always said that the identification is incorrect. There are two known company images of the 84th Illinois taken at the same time at different locations at Blue Springs. There is also an image by Sweeney showing the entire brigade deployed in battle formation with the 36th Illinois in front as skirmishers. I own a copy of that image that came out of a GAR Hall in Indiana. There is also an image of the brigade baggage train, misidentified as being the 9th Corps at Blue Springs. I had hoped to complete my research on this series of images, but never finished it after publishing my 1st article.
