  • 22d N. Y. S. M

This is the photo from the "Camp signage" post in the Camp of Instruction folder "Adjutant and First Sergeants, 22d N. Y. S. M. near Harper's Ferry, Va.1861 (i.e.1862?)"

I thought that this image would be a good one for discussion and didn't want to hijack the thread.

Aside from the fact that they all are wearing gators, I noticed that their kepi's were a lighter color and had a dark band at the bottom. Any idea what color they are?

The 22nd retained their grey-and-red kepis from their original matching uniform (hence their moniker of "Strawberry Greys.") Shortly after this series, they would be re-issued a blue chasseur-style kit.

Might they be wearing gray trousers with red stripes on the outseam (rather than sky blue)?

It looks like they are wearing a mix of issue and private purchase fatigue blouses.

            Awesome pictures Wick!

In the second picture it appears that they may be attempting to catch rain water in the cask under the fly.

And speaking of the tents and such, you are correct those things are massive! The tent and fly in the first photo would appear to be almost ten feet at the ridge pole.

Perhaps you or someone else may have noticed this, but it looks like some of those Sgts. In the first picture and the Cpl. In the last picture have some sort of braid on their caps? Marc, is that what I am seeing or is some sort of glitch in the photo?

One of my favorite features of their kit was the "UG" cartridge box cipher, for "Union Grays," the regiment's true nickname.

Those are really great pictures Marc. Thank you for clarifying the hat braid.

I especially like the 3rd photo were the young man has his knapsack opened up. Did you notice that really cool coffee pot with legs behind him?

Apparently these fellows had their own marching music as well! Here is the LOC link to the sheet music with a very nice colored wood cut of their uniforms.
