Hello,
I am not a specialist in the civil war. I came across a few shako badges recently at an estate in Connecticut. A couple of them were very easy to identify but I'm having a hard time with this one. It has Excelsior and the New York state seal on it but the regiment number is at the top (vs. the middle like other regiment shako badges I've found) and the eagle is a lot smaller with a laurel wreath around the regiment number. I've included a couple of photos of the front and back. It is stamped brass and measures roughly 3.25" high by 2.25" at the base.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you very much in advance.
