      Will,

do you happen to have a date of that image? I ask because the 10th NY were known as the National Zouaves, and spent the majority of their time in service uniformed as such. The Nov. date you have of his promotion to 1st Sgt. doesn't seem to be kosher with the Regulation uniform he is wearing. The time of the 10th NY's wearing of regulation uniforms was spring/summer '62, when their zouave uniforms were wearing out and were replaced with regulation gear until that fall. The 10th NY Unit history goes into a lot more detail, obviously.

Re: Need help with Tin Type

        Hi,
thanks but unforunately the image has no information at all, family lore has it that its abrother of my g-grandfather, and the only one not accounted for during the time of the was was named Peter, and the only Peter Coffee with that rank, was found to be with this regiment..I might be way off base on this one, but the name , rank and area where they were mustered all tie in..But, this is all circumstantial so thats why I'm throwing it out there so maybe I can get a good lead from someone...Thanks for giving me a hand..:)
        thanks

          Will,

Your probably going to have to do some serious genealogical research on your family. Once you know who was of military age, you can research to see which of them actually served. I did a quick search of the New York 1860 US Census and the only person I found was Peter Coffy, Black, born North Carolina abt 1838. I also found a Peter Coffee, Gloucester, Essex, MA, age 22, born abt 1838 in Ireland.

            Scott,
thanks for the info, I've looked at the two Peters that you mentioned, and I believe the one listed from Mass. is the one pictured. I'm taking an educated leap here but here goes his age is about right for being the brother of the confirmed relative, emigrated from the same area and port as William (my great grand father), and my ggf worked in that same area of Mass before coming to NYC. This same Peter lived in the same block as my ggf after the war, and worked as a stone cutter, the same occupation as my ggf..Now, here is where the lack of information is like a black hole..I have nothing definite, military wise that ties him in.. But, culling through the hundreds of Coffee's that enlisted from NYC theres only one I've run across that is a First Sgt.. So thats the leap.. What I'm wondering is there anyone who has ordered soldiers records and found useful information in them..On the site I'm using you can buy a cd of records for about $40 bucks, just not sure if it would be worth it...
            thanks

              HI,
I was wondering if anyone out there can pick out any details from his uniform which would hint to what theater he operated in or something which could narrow down the year this image was taken...I've been breaking out the reference books but nothing jumps out at me..Any help would be appreaciated..
              thanks
